Club member Kevin Gallagher will present "Celestial Charts - Mapping the Heavens." Throughout history celestial charts and sky maps have represented a convergence of science, art, and myth representing the culture of the era in which they were created. The enormous appetite for charts and maps of all kinds during the Age of Discovery was matched by the increasing skill and imagination of cartographers. And the cooperation between explorers and mapmakers who translated their discoveries was paralleled by the relationship between astronomers and creators of sky charts. Kevin will present a variety of examples, including works from the big four of The Golden Age of Pictorial Map Making: Johann Bayer, Johannes Hevelius, John Flamsteed and Johann Bode. This promises to be a fascinating talk.
